it causes an earthquake(:
Transform fault boundaries happen at the site where two tectonic plates move past each other in opposite directions. The two plates will grind past each other, breaking off pieces of crust from the plates. The plates can get caught on each other and pressure will build up until a break develops and the plates will lurch forward.
Feel a forward jerk on your body when bus stops suddenly, or a backward jerk when bus starts forward. A roller coaster car operates almost entirely on inertial energy. Coasting on a skateboard, bicycle, or manual scooter. A rock sitting on the ground (not moving without added energy).
The Earth is covered with tectonic "plates", partial shells of rock. As heat is distributed from the Earth's core, it moves the plates around very slowly. But the plates stick together around the edges, and as forces build up, the plates jerk or lurch across the Earth's mantle. We call this an "earthquake". The Japan plate touches the Pacific plate, and over the last 100 years or so, considerable stress built up along the boundaries. On March 11, 2011, much of the stress was relieved as the Pacific plate rode underneath the Japan plate. The movement of the Earth was significant, but the jolt caused a movement in the ocean, called a "tsunami". The tsunami is what caused most of the damage and deaths. As of March 20, 2011, the official death toll is over 8,000, but there are about 15,000 people still missing. Most areas of the Earth are subject to occasional earthquakes, especially around the edges of the Pacific plate. Because of the frequency of earthquakes and volcanoes, this is sometimes called the "Ring of Fire". Within the past year, in addition to the March 11 quake, major earthquakes have occurred in New Zealand and Chile.
I just read about this at http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/1993-to-1998-lincoln-mark-viii-6.htm2 issues:Automatic transmission: Transmission shudder or vibration under light acceleration or when shifting between third and fourth gear above 35 mph can be fixed by replacing the transmission fluid with Mercon 5 fluid. (1992-94) Be sure to drain the torque converter or you leave huge amount of old fluid in the system. The round, black plastic plug in the bell housing, just in front of the tranny oil pan, is the access to the plug. Rotate the engine with a wrench on the crankshaft to get the plug to the bottom. Also, replace the 1-2 accumulator piston and springs. The original piston suffers from poor design and the springs are likely broken. You can do this easily as it is accessible once you remove the tranny oil pan when changing the oil.Automatic transmission: The transmission may slip and the engine may flare when the transmission shifts into fourth gear, which can often be traced to a bad TR/MLP sensor. (1993-95)
Had a the same problem with my Corsica. At first I thought it was fuel related, I pressure test the fuel rack, check fuel filter, checked fuel pump pressure, nothing was bad. Really scratched my head on this one, then I checked my coil packs and I had a bad one. Replaced the coil packs and it ran great. A great source of info for your vehicle is ALLDATA.COM it is an online tech manual just for the vehicle you sign up for, the cost is $14.95 a year but well worth the cost. T Hemple
