When two seeds are planted together, if the seeds germinate, two plants will grow. It makes no difference whether they are the same variety or not, since they have no influence on each other's genetic makeup.

The only problem with planting two seeds close together, and especially two seeds of different varieties, would be if one were more vigorous and fast growing than the other. Then the stronger one might 'shade out' the other, taking all the sunlight. If they are sharing a pot, the bigger one's roots might also 'squeeze out' the other, causing it to be very stunted, or not to survive at all.

What happens to pollen?

Think of pollen as a flower's sperm. It's carried, be it by water, air, or animal, to a different flower, where it is recieved. That other flower makes seeds which are then carried to a different location, planted, and grows into a new flower. So, pollen helps make baby flowers.

Can insect pollination take place in a closed flower?

Depends on the definition of "closed flower".If you mean a flower that is enclosed with petals which are open, such as an Orchid, then the answer would be yes. This happens with many different types of flowers, some which have special adaptations to target a specific insect pollinator. If you mean a closed flower that has not yet opened, then the answer is almost definitely no. When the petals are closed and folded together the stigma and anthers are not yet mature; this means that even if an insect were able to get between the closed petals there sex organs of the flower would not yet be receptive to pollination.Generally insect pollination takes place in open flowers but there are specific cases of insect pollination in closed flowers as in case of many species of Ficus, Lotus etc.
