Ground moraine forms from unsorted materials left beneath a glacier as it advances and retreats. These consist of a mixture of different-sized rock fragments, sediments, and debris that were ground up and carried along by the glacier.
A glacier will pick up rocks as it moves downhill. It is these rocks that gouge out the underlying ground and will eventually form a 'U' shaped valley. As the rocks are also ground down into a paste, the bed rock layers the glacier moves over can become quite polished.
The depressions left by melted blocks of ice in glacial deposits are called kettle holes. They are circular or oval-shaped depressions that form when large chunks of ice left behind by a retreating glacier become buried in sediment. When the ice eventually melts, it creates a hole in the ground.
