During the Pliocene era, which lasted from about 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago, several hominid species emerged, including Australopithecus afarensis, exemplified by the famous fossil "Lucy." This genus is characterized by bipedalism and a mix of ape-like and human-like traits. Other notable species from this period include Australopithecus africanus and Paranthropus, which displayed adaptations for both foraging and possible tool use. The Pliocene laid critical groundwork for the evolution of later hominins, leading into the Pleistocene era.
The Pliocene epoch ended around 2.6 million years ago with the transition into the Pleistocene epoch due to the onset of significant global cooling and the development of vast ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere. This period marked the beginning of the Ice Age.
One characteristic that was not common among early hominids was the ability to create complex tools and technology. This advanced cognitive ability is considered a defining feature of the Homo genus, which includes modern humans.
The Cenozoic era is subdivided into two periods: the Paleogene and the Neogene. The Paleogene includes the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene epochs, while the Neogene includes the Miocene and Pliocene epochs.
This is the Cenozoic era, near the boundary of Quaternary and Neogene periods, and therefore near the boundary of the Pleistocene and Pliocene epochs. Please see the link.
Pilocene is not a word. Pliocene, however, is an Era of the Tertiary Period, referring to, roughly, 10-2 million years ago.

Hominids live today
The first hominids, known as Australopithecus, appeared during the Pliocene epoch, around 4 to 5 million years ago in Africa. These early hominids walked upright and had a mixture of ape-like and human-like features.

One characteristic of hominids that did not exist before humans is the ability to create and use advanced tools. This skill of crafting and utilizing tools is a unique trait that distinguishes humans from other hominids.
it proved that hominids lived in East Africa 5,000 years ago.
The Homo sapiens is the hominid species that has lived the longest and is the only existing species of hominids.
Hominids are also known as humans. The first hominids lived around 4 or 5 million years ago and have not become extinct.
