  • The island of Surtsey did not exist until the 14th of November 1963*
  • Surtsey is Icelandic and means "Surtur's Island"
  • The source of the lava that formed Surtsey was the Mid-Atlantic-Ridge (MAR). The MAR is part of a system of Mid-Ocean-Ridges that together form the longest mountain chain on Earth.
  • The islands mode of formation (eruption of lava into water) means that the rock (known as Scoria) is very easily weathered and eroded meaning that the island has decreased in size ever since the volcanic eruption stopped.

*This was the day when the solidified lava from an undersea eruption just south of Iceland first broke the surface of the Atlantic.
