The Japanese have many plants of significant attachment eg. the chrysanthemum which is symbolic of royalty or nobility. When the emperor was considered divine, he sat on the "Chrysanthemum Throne". The yellow chrysanthemum was particularly significant because yellow was the colour, historically only used by the Emperor. Bamboo is admired by Japan and other Asian cultures and represents strength and longevity If there is one plant that has particular meaning to the Japanese, it is the cherry blossom. In ancient times the Japanese predicted good crop growing times by the flowering cycle of the cherry blossom. The cherry blossom is the unofficial national flower of Japan. The cherry blosson festival is held in Spring in the northern hemisphere. The flowering period of the cherry blossom is short and intense and because of this has gathered spiritual and philosophical significance eg. beauty and the fragility of the human mind and spirit.
