A volcanic crater is the part from which the ejecta or magma are emitted. Commonly a conical depression is left due to the withdrawal of the magma chamber that created the eruption. Sometimes infilled with a crater lake.

If the eruption was of the highly explosive variety, there may not be very much of a mountain form surrounding the crater. Examples would include L Taupo in New Zealand, and the Yellowstone caldera.
