Oxidation reactions provide the thrust to launch the space shuttle.

Explanation:

When liquid & solid fuels are burnt, they provide sufficient thrust to place a space shuttle in orbit hundreds of kilometres from Earth. Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen react to power the shuttle's main engines.

hydrogen+oxygen=water

In space, liquid fuels such as hydrazine is oxidised to produce an enormous amount of gas. As the gas is release, the rocket is thrust forward. By controlling the direction of the thrust, it is possible to steer the rocket.
