Whether or not a trait is undesirable hinges on the circumstances and at what point the trait is considered to be a defect.

For example: Blue eyes are selected for because they are considered to be attractive. This makes them desirable and the frequency of the blue-eyed allele in

creases in the population.

Brown eyes are better able to withstand bright light and preserve the optic nerve...in the environment above, brown eyes are undesirable even though the characteristic has advantages over blue.

Obvious undesirable traits are those that create a defect in the function of an organism resulting in disability, death or sterility.

In a "natural" environment the selection of characteristics that increase life expectancy, ability to remain healthy, consume effectively, reproduce and have a high survival rate of viable offspring are desirable.

If any characteristic that doesn't achieve or improve on one of the these primary goals in an organism's environment is only undesirable and therefore selected against if it diminishes the function of the individual members of the gene pool resulting in poor survivability and poor reproductive success.
