Specifically, chemical, commercial, conventional, non-organic fertilizers tend to be called "NPK" fertilizers. The initials are the symbols of the above-mentioned three nutrients. These three nutrients are called "macronutrients" because plants need them in quantities far larger than the required amounts of other essential plant nutrients.
