Chert!
Replacement chert, actually. Made of mostly silica, and has similar properties as quartz (hard, fractures).
It is a limestone, hard.
Limestone and marble are classified as different rocks because they have different properties and formation processes. Limestone is formed from the accumulation of calcium carbonate shells and skeletons of marine organisms, while marble is a metamorphic rock formed from the recrystallization of limestone through high heat and pressure. This leads to differences in their appearance, composition, and hardness.
Limestone would be potentially harder until the clay is fired. The problem we have here is that "clay" is an ambiguous term. There is no homogenous or standard formula for clay. However, clays can generally be formed and baked to become set and hard. This is called firing. Fired clay tends to be quite hard, and depending on the formula, might be harder than limestone.
Limestone or chalk is a sedimentary rock composed of Calcium carbonate or calcium carbonate compounds where the inner core may undergo change by heat and pressure to become hard chert. However when it undergoes metamorphosis by extreme heat and pressure over time it turns into marble.
The process that hardens limestone over time is called lithification, which involves compaction and cementation of sediment particles. Additionally, the presence of minerals like calcite can contribute to the hardness of limestone. These factors together make limestone resistant to erosion.

chert.
The hard sedimentary rock that often forms inside limestone is called chert. Chert is composed of microcrystalline quartz and can be found in nodules or layers within limestone deposits. It forms through the replacement of limestone by silica-rich solutions.
A hard sedimentary rock that forms inside limestone is called chert. It is composed of microcrystalline quartz and often forms nodules or layers within limestone due to the replacement of calcium carbonate by silica-rich fluids.

Chert, a form of quartz, can form as beds or nodules in limestone or dolostone.

Hard and soft are relative attributes. Compared to a Marshmallow, limestone is very hard. It's even harder when comparing it with candy floss. In comparison to granite, steel or diamonds, limestone is a pretty soft rock.
It is both hard and soft rock becasue of the elves living inside it.
