Drepanocytes are abnormal sickle-shaped red blood cells found in sickle cell disease. These cells can block blood vessels, causing pain, organ damage, and decreased oxygen delivery to tissues. Their crescent shape is due to a mutation in hemoglobin that causes the cells to stiffen and become sticky.
