Global warming is the warming of the earth since humans discovered fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), and especially the rapid warming since 1980.

It matters to the US (and to the world) because if the earth continues to warm

  • People will die from famines, flooding and heat waves.
  • Countries (Pacific Islands) will disappear or have their coastal plains submerged by rising sea levels.
  • Millions of people will have to move, and most of these will be extremely poor, with no support from their economically troubled governments.
  • Animal, birds and fish species will disappear as their habitats go.
