Lightning is a sudden discharge of electrons from clouds to the ground. When storm clouds gather up lots of electrons, which are negative, the electrons are attracted to the ground's positive charge (opposites attract). The cloud's electrons build up so much that they leap to the ground in one stream, causing visible lightning.

Lightning can have various impacts, including causing wildfires, damaging buildings, injuring people or animals, and disrupting power supplies and communication networks. It can also lead to forest destruction and soil erosion.
Static discharge is causes the spark that is seen when electricity in a thunderhead discharges. The most common name for this type of spark or discharge is lightening.
Earthquakes have caused more deaths than hurricanes, and hurricanes have caused more deaths than lightning.

To my knowledge, there is no way to lessen the causes of lightning - it is a weather phenomena, and man does not have much control over the weather.
Lightning can occur in snowstorms when there are strong updrafts and downdrafts present, along with the presence of charged particles in the atmosphere. These conditions can result in the separation of electric charges, leading to the discharge of lightning.

Lightning causes a DC transient waveform (A large initial current that decays to zero).
Lightning causes N2 to form oxides. NO2, NO3 is made in this process.
Lightning is an electrical discharge through air. This discharge causes the air around the lightning bolt to violently heat (hotter than the suface of the sun) and expand; the air then quickly cools and contracts. This causes the audible crack or rumble of thunder (depending on your distance from the lightning).
Lightning causes thunder. Lightning is a massive electrical discharge that you see as a bolt or flash of light. Thunder is the sound caused when the lightning superheats the air, creating a shockwave.
