Mass madness is group hysteria where a large group has an uncontrollable outburst of emotions or fear, usually irrationally. Some instances include: the Salem Witch Trials when the community believed people were witches and hunted them down and executed them; the Holocaust when the Nazis executed Jews; the Nigerian Genitalia Vanishing Epidemic of 1990; the anthrax and SARS scares after 9/11; thoughts of the world ending after 1999 and now in 2012; cults; etc.
