Think you're mixing up dispersion with displacement! As dispersion is to do with waves, most commonly used for describing the effect that happens when light is shone through a prism, which results in the light being separated into the different colours.

Displacements is to do with the volume of something whether it be gas or liquid (can't remember if it's to do with with solids as solids generally stay, well, solid). So the law is that the exact same amount must exist so like in the bath you go in an the water goes up, it's being displaced.

Sorry i'm not a physicist so my explanations is what i can remember from my As physics (which is not a lot)
