A furnace by definition provides heat. There must be something that controls that heat; that is that tells the furnace when to fire up the burners and when to shut down the burners. This function is provided by the furnace control system. Usually the control system itself is controlled by a thermostat which maintains the temperature at a preset level on the thermostat.

A feedback control system (or feedback inhibition or negative feedback) is a system where a body detects a need for a something, then increases the production of it, and when it detects that sufficient amount is acquired, will stop the production. Its basically like refilling the need to a certain amount then stopping once the amount is reached and not exceeding. One example is the reaction when your body feels cold. The thermoreceptors on your skin passes signals to your brain and reaches the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus will send off thyrotropsin-releasing hormone through the hypophyseal portal system to the anterior pituitary, which responds to the TRH by sending thyroid-stimulating hormone. The TSH reaches the thyroid gland and tells it to make thyroxin which speeds up metabolism to increase temperature. Once the temperature is back to normal the hypothalamus will stop producing TRH.
