It is a registered trademark sourced from the name of manufactured insulation material made by lamination of various thickness grades of aluminium foil (US/AE, aluminum) with layers of other material(s) such as kraft paper, woven polypropylene substrate, retardant adhesive, or fibreglass (US/AE, fiberglass). The thickness(es) and grades (light to heavy) of the finished products vary depending on intended use (e.g., for insulation, coating, wall wrap, and radiant barriers used for glare reduction), as well as the types, quantities, and thickness of materials incorporated into the finished product. Due to chemical reactivity of aluminium, the product is not alkali-tolerant. Manufacturer and general information may be available from link(s) included for the Sources and related links in the lower left hand section of this column.

There are quite a few ways to insulate your house. If you are living in a cold climate you can insulate the flooring by installing batts between the joists or if you have a slab, installing heating in the concrete. For all climates, walls can be insulated with a minimum house wrap to structural insulated panels containing a sandwiched core of expanded Styrofoam. Reflective wall paint has some benefit as well as double glazing and tinting your windows. Roofs can be insulated with fibreglass batts and foil sisalation either on top of the ceiling drywall between the joists or under the iron or tile roofing. You can also paint the roof with reflective paint. Sealing gaps around the house will help, especially high windows and second story areas. You can also insulate your home by double glazing, carpet and loft insulation.
