One safe alternative method I know of (working for the oil and gas industry) is called "Terra Slicing" it does not involve shape charged perforation but a environmentally and ecologically safe excavation process of which fracturing is possible and highly determinable. A frac is the pressurization of the formation and pressure will always take the path of least resistance and there indeterminable. Companies that decided to frac off a slice can control the frac for at least 20 meters from the walls of a slice because the artificial compression created by Terra Slicing exceeds any natural tangential or lateral pressure found in-situ. It also recovers more oil and gas than any other method.
Hydraulic Fracturing, commonly known as 'fracking'.
Natural gas is harvested through a process called hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking. This method involves drilling deep into the ground to extract the natural gas trapped in shale rock formations. Hydraulic fracturing uses a combination of water, sand, and chemicals to break apart the rock and release the gas.
The process for extracting natural gas is hydraulic fracturing also referred to as "fracking". In this process rock is drilled in to deep enough to hit the natural gases, and pump them for extraction.
Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) has allow gas producers to reach new reserves of natural gas in the US...tapping a 200 year domestic supply.
If a well is capped improperly or the cement casing around a well cracks, then yes, small amounts of methane can escape into the Atmosphere. Methane is harmless to people unless is it concentrated in a small space. Methane is a far greater Green-house Gas than CO2. The natural gas companies get from hydraulic fracturing is used in part to power Natural Gas Cars and other vehicles, which can have 90% fewer greenhouse emissions that cars that run on gasoline. Companies that use Hydrofracking have a responsibility to the people around the wells and the environment as a whole. If a well is drilled improperly then, in the long term, natural gas drilling [FRACKING] can actually help reduce our carbon footprint while at the same time increasing our 'Uranium in Nature' footprint.
yes hydraulic fracturing of natural gas does effect seismic activity.
Hydraulic fracturing was created to allow otherwise inaccessible oil and natural gas reserves to be tapped and harvested for human use.

Hydraulic fracturing breaks open the rock that contains oil or gas deposits and holds this fracture open with sand or proppant so that the oil or gas is able to flow into the wellbore for surface extraction. Without hydraulic fracturing oil and natural gas prices in this country would be astronomical.

The political of hydraulic fracturing (HF) is the issue for natural gas. The issue for natural gas has resulted in protests, lobbying, and a divided public in New York City.
I know Vermont just signed a bill banning hydraulic Fracturing. The states where Hydraulic Fracturing is allowed are all doing very well though. Natural Gas drilling brings in lots of money and creates jobs for Americans. If a well is dug responsibly, there should not be any effect on the environment whatsoever, so a state banning hydraulic fracturing seems a little excessive to me.

Natural gas is extracted using hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking. This process involves pumping high-pressure water, sand, and chemicals into underground rock formations to release natural gas trapped within the rock.
Natural gas is found underground in rock formations called reservoirs. It is extracted by drilling wells into these reservoirs and using a process called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to release the gas trapped in the rock.
