The space in an image that appears farthest away from the viewer is called the background or the depth of field.
The foreground refers to the part of a scene or image that appears closest to the viewer, typically framing the main subject or object of focus. It helps create depth and perspective by providing a point of reference in front of the background.
The darkest part of a shadow is called the "umbra" The lighter part of a shadow is called the "penumbra" An "antumbra" is the area of light which surrounds the object creating a shadow, as in a "ring of fire" eclipse (like the recent one in May, 2012). It can best be seen when the viewer is beyond the focal point of the umbra, but in line with it.
Early lenses used in simple optical devices like telescopes and microscopes were called eyepieces because they were positioned close to the eye of the viewer to magnify the image formed by the main lens or objective. This allowed the viewer to see a larger, clearer image of the object being observed.
