What is the difference between a rocket and a spacecraft?

There is no evidence that there are aliens in outer space. This does not mean that extra terrestrial life does not exist. We do not know yet.

My version:

Earth, a significant planet of an insignificant star in the Milky Way; who or what would know if the star died.Most species including us on earth are destined to become extinct in another 1000 - 2000 years as conditions on this planet change. Any onlooker (alien) who stumbles on this planet will see it as an inhospitable barren planet. Who could imagine that this was once a lush, green, filled with life, the most beautiful species, and us! Also, great matches, music events,famous disasters,great musicians,great industries and great people were part of this once beautiful world. This is what we see around from our telescopes; many such worlds gone. In the vastness of this space there definitely are aliens. Many of them could even be in our own galaxy. The distances are too far for you and me to imagine.

Robotic spacecraft that remain in orbit around the planetary body are artificial satellites. Starships, which are built for interstellar travel, are so far a theoretical concept only.

I don't think there's a formal differentiation, but if it were up to me, I'd say ROCKETS are not specifically designed to leave Earth's orbit and venture out into the solar system and beyond, where SPACESHIPS are. For example, many modern jet fighters carry air-to-air rockets as a type of armament. The term "rocket" has to do with the type of propulsion used. A rocket uses a chemical reaction to produce thrust, as opposed to a jet or combustion engine that burns fuel.

Yes. Spaceships have been used for many years to launch artificial earth satellites,

manned missions to low earth orbit and to the moon, unmanned probes to other bodies

in the solar system and on trajectories that would ultimately take them out of the solar

system. Many have been successful. Many others have gone astray after launch. Still others

have exploded on the launch pad.

So the Space Shuttles are "spacecraft"; they have engines and can modify their orbits. The International Space Station is a satellite; while it has thrusters that would enable it to Dodge space junk and debris, the ISS can't change its orbit by very much.
