Well, for atoms to stop moving, the temperature would have to be at 0 K, aka absolute zero. However, that's theoretically impossible. Anyway, solid molecules barely move, "vibrating" against each other in a tightly packed space. For liquid molecules, they can slide past each other and move about, but there's not much space between the particles. As for gas, the particles are much faster than particles of solid or liquid, and the particles move about freely, bumping into each other. If you want more info on the 3 states of matter, here's a great web for you to start with http://www.chem.purdue.edu/gchelp/atoms/states.html

No, they are in motion in a liquid as well. In a solid they vibrate in place.

How many combinations of the three states of matter are there?

There are three basic states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. The number of combinations possible from these states is 3! (3 factorial), which equals 6. The six possible combinations are solid-liquid-gas, solid-gas-liquid, liquid-solid-gas, liquid-gas-solid, gas-solid-liquid, and gas-liquid-solid.

Examples of the nine types of solution according to physical state?

Solid in solid: metal alloys. Liquid in liquid: vinegar dissolving in water. Gas in gas: air. Solid in liquid: salt dissolving in water. Liquid in solid: mercury absorbed by gold. Gas in liquid: carbon dioxide dissolving in soda. Solid in gas: smoke particles in air. Liquid in gas: water vapor in air. Gas in solid: hydrogen absorbed by palladium.

What are three forms of matter (liquid solid and gas)?

As we all know d 3 forms of matter,Solid Liquid and Gas,the difference between these 3 is the distance between the molecules of matter, the order of dist between these states is as below solid<liquid<gas.
