The respiratory system functions the same in both males and females. Female lungs tend to be a little smaller, and a woman's heart may have more capillaries feeding it (as evidenced by a difference in heart attack symptoms between genders). Outside of that, everything works the same. The lungs take in oxygen and absorb the oxygen into the blood, and they expel carbon dioxide and other waste gases.
