It is usually made of fiberglass or plaster and can be designed to cover the thumb while leaving the fingers exposed for function. The cast often extends from the base of the thumb and wraps around the palm, securing the thumb in a fixed position to promote healing. It may also have a thumb hole to allow for some mobility in the other fingers.

Thumb sesamoidectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the sesamoid bones located at the base of the thumb, specifically in the area of the first metacarpophalangeal joint. This surgery is typically performed to alleviate pain and improve function in patients suffering from conditions such as sesamoiditis or arthritis. The procedure can help restore mobility and reduce discomfort in the thumb, allowing for better hand function. Recovery may involve physical therapy to strengthen the thumb and restore range of motion.
Yes, you can try to hide your thumb during a thumb war by keeping it tucked underneath your other fingers. However, doing so may make it more challenging to play effectively and may also make it easier for your opponent to pin your thumb. It's generally more fun and fair to keep your thumb in plain sight during the game.
In tenpin bowling, bowlers who are having difficulty with release, usually related to the ball sticking on the thumb, will sometimes have a very small hole drilled just below the thumb hole, at angle that enters into the lower part of the thumb hole. For plastic, urethane or rubber inserts, a hole is drilled the size of the outer diameter of the insert to be used. Care must be taken to factor how the span of the inserts are placed with where the holes are placed. After drilling has been done, the inserts are glued in. While thumb inserts can be replaceable, it's more common to drill a large hole where the thumb goes and a solid thumb insert is glued in the hole. The thumb hole is then drilled into the solid insert.
