The foramen magnum is positioned in the center of the basicranium (the bottom of the skull).
This is a change from the foramen magnum being further back as it is in normal quadrupeds such as in apes as the upright spinal shape requires a more central entrance into the skull in order to
also keep the head upright, in the optimum visual position.
The location of the foramen magnum also means that the head is better balanced and that the facial muscles are not required to support the skull upright but instead are used purely for facial expressions.
