The term is "Greenwich Mean Time."

Greenwich, England is the city through which the Prime Meridian runs -- that's the north-south imaginary line on the earth from which we count/measure westward or eastward to determine degrees of longitude.

GMT is the time in the time zone Greenwich is in. One often sees other time zones designated in relation to GMT, such as New York City is (I think) "GMT -5" -- we are five hours behind Greenwich time. So, since it's 6:30 p.m. here, it's 11:30 p.m. in Greenwich, England and its time zone.

You can get an idea of where a city is geographically by finding out its time zone in relation to GMT, such as, if you don't know where Santa Barbara, California is, you get some idea if you learn it's in zone GMT -8, U.S. Pacific Time.

I'm not sure, but I think the "w" is silent, making the pronunciation Gren'-ich (short e, as in men).
