The moon phase starts as New Moon where the moon is not visible, then progresses to Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and finally Waning Crescent before repeating the cycle.

The moon phase that follows the new moon is the waxing crescent phase. During this phase, a small sliver of the moon is illuminated on the right side, signaling the beginning of the moon's waxing or growing phase as it moves towards a full moon.
The new moon phase occurs when the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, with the side of the moon that is illuminated facing away from us and appearing dark. This phase marks the beginning of the lunar cycle and is not visible from Earth.
The last quarter moon phase occurs when the moon is three-quarters of the way through its orbit around Earth. It appears as a half moon and is visible in the western sky after midnight and during the morning. This phase marks the beginning of the waning moon, leading up to the new moon.
On February 6, 2010, the moon was a waning crescent. At the beginning of February 6 ... at midnight, Mountain Daylight, Friday night ... the moon was 47% illuminated. At the end of February 6 ... at midnight, Mountain Daylight, Saturday night ... the moon was 37% illuminated.
Since the phases repeat continuously throughout the lifetime of a person, it's hard to saywhere the beginning of the cycle is.Many cultures consider the beginning to be the phase where you can't see any of the moon at all.Which leads naturally to the name by which that phase is commonly known ... "New Moon".If you accept that point as the beginning of the cycle, then the phase in the middle of the cycleis the "Full Moon".
The moon phase that occurs after sunset and before sunrise is the waxing crescent. This phase appears as a thin sliver of light on the right side of the moon. It is considered the beginning phase of the lunar cycle.

New Moon.
They're cyclic, so which one comes "first" depends on where you define the start point. One easy way to remember it is that the lighted portion of the moon looks like the letters DOC in that order (with the new moon occuring at both the beginning and end of that sequence).
