Filiform papillae are the most abundant type of papillae on the tongue and they do not have a gustatory role. They are responsible for providing the tongue with its rough texture and do not contain taste buds like the other types of papillae.
Most are located on the dorsal surface of the tongue. A few are found on the soft palate, epiglottis, pharynx, and inner surface of the cheeks.
Taste buds are located on your tongue, most of them being on the surface. You can't see taste buds with the naked eye, but they are clustered around the small bumps on your tongue called papillae. Each taste bud contains taste receptor cells that help you perceive different flavors.

The fungiform papillae, concentrated at the tip and edges of the tongue, are most sensitive to taste. These papillae contain taste buds and are responsible for detecting sweet, sour, salty, and bitter flavors.
The sense of taste begins with the taste buds, located on top of the fungiform papillae, or the large bumps on the tongue. Other taste receptor cells can be found on the palate and in the throat, but the tongue has the most. The fungiform papillae are shaped similar to mushrooms and sometimes swell a little when stimulated. Alongside the fungiform papillae are the filiform papillayes, smell dose afect your taste. Where exactly are taste buds located?Taste buds are everywhere on the tongue. Some areas of the tongue have more taste buds than the others though. For example, the tip of the tongue tastes sweet things e.g. Chocolates. Just to the right and left of the tip are the salty taste buds. After the salty ones are the sour ones.At the very back of tongue, the tongue tastes the bitter things. The middle of the tongue has only a few taste buds.MEDICAL TERMINOLOGYTaste receptors are located on taste buds from the tongue called papillae. There are 4 types of papillae:1. Filiform2. Fungiform3. Foliate4. CircumvallateTaste buds are located only on the Fungiform, Foliate and Circumvallate papillae only!
In the pig, as in most mammals, these are located in fungiform papillae on the tip of the tongue, and foliate and vallate papillae on the back of the tongue. ... As a result of this, the pig tongue has three to four times more taste buds than the human tongue.
The majority of cows have a tongue that is nearly black in color. This is because of the dark pigments that make up the tongue.
The best measure most likely to succeed is to scrape the surface of the tongue and vigorously clean the tongue surface with a firm soft-bristled toothbrush or tongue scraper. This removes the overgrown papillae and bacteria mechanically, making them less likely to grow back but hairy tongue disease may recur.Practice good oral hygieneTry to reduce smokingEliminate use of potential causative factors.http://www.intelligentdental.com/2010/02/02/got-a-hairy-tongue/

White tongue, or more often, white hairy tongue (lingua villosa alba) is a benign (harmless) hypertrophy (overgrowth) of the filiform papillae, which grow from the surface of the tongue and are the most numerous of the papillae (the others being involved with taste). Not being involved with taste, they are thought to have a mechanical function. For example, in cats, they constitute the abrasive surface of the tongue and are thought to aid in cleaning the fur. There are numerous suggestions as to how they may serve humans. The etiology of hypertrophy of filiform papillae in humans is unknown - with systemic disease, diet, environmental factors, medications, and heredity being among those postulated. While ordinarily whitish, the papilla can become stained by foods or tobacco and assume corresponding colors. If particularly long, hairy tongue might be a source of halitosis (bad breath) as food particles/debris might become entangled within their mass. Generally, vigorous brushing or scraping of the tongue can minimize halitosis by not only removing debris but also by removing some of the overgrowth of the papilla. Regardless, it is important to remember that white hairy tongue is harmless.
