Traditional oven cleaner is lye, it chemically turns the baked on fat and oil to soap. This soap then helps clean off the other baked on stuff. I don't know (yet) how the new lye free oven cleaners work.
The chemical formulation for most known oven cleaners typically includes caustics, such as either sodium hydroxide (lye) or potassium hydroxide. While many such products are somewhat effective in their ability to clean ovens, they commonly have a high pH and are therefore undesirable because of associated hazards in handling and application. Fumes from such products are hazardous and irritating to the eyes and throat and can also cause chemical skin burns. Accidental contact of those cleaners with eyes can result in severe damage. Moreover, the odors from these products and their reaction to oven dirt are unpleasant. Finally, as oven cleaning products are generally more effective when the oven is heated, all of the above hazards and objectionable traits are exacerbated when working with heated ovens.
oven cleaner is not an element so it is not in the periodic table
Litmus paper will turn blue when exposed to oven cleaner, as oven cleaners are typically alkaline (basic) in nature. The blue color indicates a basic pH, while red litmus paper would remain unchanged. This reaction is a simple way to test for the presence of basic substances.
Yes, using oven cleaners on a self-cleaning oven can damage the interior coating and affect its self-cleaning function. These harsh chemicals can leave residue that interferes with the oven's ability to clean itself at high temperatures, leading to potential issues with functionality and performance. It is safer to use only approved cleaning methods for self-cleaning ovens.

Yes! Oven cleaner can definitely burn your skin. I was burned by alkali oven cleaner recently. Its quite painful. I suggest wearing gloves and making sure that there is no back splash if it is a spray cleaner. Chemical burns can be very dangerous and you should avoid them at all costs.
