What is the official name of the moon?

The Moon, with a capital M, is the official name of our moon. we refer to other planets moons as moons (with a small m) just like stars are referred to as suns, we call our sun "the Sun". The term "Sol" is widely used amongst languages (mainly Latin) as the name for the Sun, Luna is a another word used for our Moon.

There are actually two quarter moons per month each distinguished by whether the moon is Waxing (lighted portion increasing) or Waning (lighted portion decreasing). The moon goes through eight officially recognized phases each month: New moon (no direct illumination) Waxing crescent (less than half illuminated while increasing) The first quarter moon (one-half of the Moon appears illuminated by direct sunlight while the illuminated part is on the increase), Waxing Gibbous (where more than half illuminated while increasing) , Full Moon (completely illuminated), Waning Gibbous (less than fully but more than half illuminated), Last Quarter moon (one-half of the moon is illuminated while the illuminated portion is on the decrease), and Waning Crescent (partly, but less than half illuminated) by which time you're back to a New Moon again. For the record, terms like Blue Moon, and Harvest Moon are hold overs from when farmers used moon phases to determine planting and harvest cycles.
