The plasma membrane is another name for the cell membrane. It encloses the organelles & the intracellular fluid & keeps them separate from the extracellular environment, but selectively allows substances to pass through in either direction.

The phospholipid bilayer that forms the membrane is structures with the inner portion and outer portions playing a very vital role. The shelling of the layers are hydrophilic, while the space between is hydrophobic. This allows water and other polar molecules to pass through quite easily, but non-polar molecules have a much harder time.

These phospholipids are polar, as the have hydorphilic (water loving) eads on each side (outermost layer and innermost layer), and hydrophobic (water hating) tails on the middle layer. This hydrophobic layer of tails limits the ability of materials to pass through as it is water hating, thus repelling the particles trying to enter. In order to let some particle enter, the membrane has many different proteins dispersed throughout, allowing multiple different means through wich particle can pass. Water can pass through proteins called aquaporins, while larger transport molecules are needed to solid materials. Solid materials can travel up their concentration gradient into or out of the cell, by the use of energy and facilitated diffusion. They can also move down their concentration gradients via passive transport, requiring no energy.

Overall, the membrane is used to create concentration gradients of materials. This emans that it can keep materials in or out, in order to benefit the cell. It has the capability to move whichevery items it wants in which ever direction, and is necessary for cellular survival.
