Placing a plant cell in a hypertonic solution can lead a cell to experience plasomolysis. Plant cells loses water in hypertonic solutions, and begin to welt due to a loss of turgor pressure. Further water will stimulate plasmolysis: pressure decreases to the point where the protoplasm of the cell peels away from the cell wall, leaving gaps between the cell wall and the membrane.
