What is the symbol of the planet Mercury and why?

Because although Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, it does not have an atmosphere. Venus however (which is the hottest planet), has a high carbon dioxide atmosphere so it acts as a blanket trapping in the heat.

It is associated with Virgo because of this signs emphasis on the practical use of the mind. Those astrologers that are now using Chiron in their interpretations feel that this new body is better suited to govern the sign Virgo. Chiron has associations with dedication to service; the practical and efficient application of knowledge; affinity for teaching others, particularly how to do things in a more efficient manner; health and healing, particularly through natural means. All these traits seem to more aptly apply to Virgo than Mercury does.

Why would it not be? It meets all the criteria. It is in stable orbit around a sun, it is large enough so that its gravity has formed it into a shape very close to a sphere, and it has cleared its neighborhood of debris. If it missed any one of these criteria, it would not be considered a major planet.

I'm really not sure exactly what it is supposed to look like, but it is very similar to the symbol for Venus. I find this extremely odd, as there's not much linking the two, but there's probably a reason for it. I hope somebody else on here knows...if they don't, you might want to ask on an astronomy or astrology forum. They would know.
