Why dis Antoine lavoisier get his head cut off?

Because beside being a scientist he was a 'tax farmer'. Collecting taxes is never easy but it was particularly difficult in the pre-modern age and one solution was for the state to assess the potential tax take from a region and 'sell' a contract for collection at a large discount to the highest bidder. So for example, estimated revenue $1m is sold to a tax farmer for $0.5m. So the closer the tax farmer can collect up to $1m, then the more he makes in profit. Naturally, tax farmers and their agents used some 'sturdy' methods in collecting and this made them particularly unpopular.

What if anything does the Trinity Church have to do with the Edwards Land in New York?

From what I have heard from family is that Robert Edwards ( a supposedly pirate)ship went down somewhere between England and New York. He willed the land to siblings and their children. Siblings of Robert Edwards are Susan Rebecca Edwards, Rueben Nathaniel Edwards and John? Edwards. Anyway, either Robert or Thomas (Robert's father leased the land to two brothers for 99 years or so the story goes. When the brothers died the land then was suppose to go to the Edwards family but it never did. The Edwards were suppose to claim the land after the 99 years were up but no one claimed therefore the land would be sold to the highest bidder. Which in this case was the Trinity church. Hoped this help some. added: I believe this page really explains it in detail. I am the great great granddaughter of Catherine Edwards who was an heir. http://www.genealogy.com/users/b/y/n/Sharron-Bynum/FILE/0003page.html

Can auctioneer refuse to accept highest bid?

Yes. The rule is that the bidder is making an offer to buy and the auctioneer accepts this in whatever manner is customary, usually the fall of the hammer. A bidder may withdraw his or her bid at any time before the fall of the hammer, but any bid in any event lapses as an offer on the making of a higher bid, so that if a higher bid is made, then withdrawn before the fall of the hammer, the auctioneer cannot then purport to accept the previous highest bid. If an auction is without reserve then whilst there is no contract of sale between the owner of the goods and the highest bidder (because the placing of goods in the auction is an invitation to treat) there is a collateral contract between the auctioneer and the highest bidder that the auction will be held without reserve (i.e., that the highest bid, however low, will be accepted).
