You don't need ANY kind of telescope to see the solar eclipse. The Celestron Nexstar 8 SE has a computerised hand controller which works fine by itself but can be greatly enhanced by connecting the telescope to a computer. The Celestron is not particularly Mac friendly but will certainly work with either a Mac or Windows PC.The first problem is connecting to a computer as the telescope's old style RS-232 serial port is not supported by many modern computers and so either an RS-232 port PC Card or a USB to serial adapter is required. The telescope comes with a limited version of TheSky software (which may well be for Windows only) but this can be replaced with TheSkyX Serious Astronomer Edition which supports both Macs and Windows and can control a range of telescopes including the 8 SE.
