Angelina Fanny Hesse made the isolation of bacteria possible by suggesting the use of agar-agar. In the early 1880's Hitchens and Leikind suggested that 'plain agar' be referred to as 'Frau Hesse's medium' to acknowledge her forgotten 'service to science and to humanity.' Perhaps it's finally time that we remember Frau Hesse and celebrate all the ignored 'bead collectors' working in the laboratories and kitchens that make science possible.

Agar is actually an inert but great medium for growing microorganisms. It will grow the largest number of different types of microbes - fungi and bacteria. Agar is a general purpose medium supporting growth of a wide range of non-fastidious organisms.

Yet, not all bacteria can grow on it. Some find it too rich, and others find it deficient. An example of a fastidious organism is Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which requires blood or hemoglobin and several amino acids and vitamins in order to grow.
You would then know that the organism you are looking at can't be gonorrhea since it didn't grow.

Of what value is a capsule to a bacterium?

A capsule to a bacterium helps bacteria adhere to surfaces and resist flushing. Several bacteria that have capsules are klebsiella, pneumoniae, bacillus subtillus, and streptococcus pneumoniae.

Why are buffers used in culture media?

Many bacteria produce metabolic acids that may lower the pH and inhibit their growth. To prevent this, buffers that produce a pH equilibrium are added to culture media to neutralize these acids.

What were some obstacles for Robert a millikan?

What is the importance of phytochemical screening?

Phytochemical screening is important because it helps in identifying and isolating bioactive compounds in plants that may have medicinal or nutritional value. It provides insights into the chemical composition of plants and their potential health benefits. This screening can lead to the development of new drugs, supplements, and functional foods.

Is turquoise mixed with copper ore valuable?

Turquoise forms when water containing copper minerals percolates through rocks. The value of turquoise mixed with copper ore would depend on the quality of the turquoise, the amount of copper present, and the overall aesthetics of the specimen. Generally, well-formed, high-quality turquoise specimens with visible copper mineralization can hold significant value to collectors and jewelry makers.

How is the Gram stain technique be of value in establishing purity of a culture of bacteria?

What is the value of petri plates in microbiology?

It gives microbiologists a way to grow bacteria on a solid medium. This is important if you want to be able to obtain a pure culture, without a solid medium to grow bacteria it would be nearly impossible. On a solid media a single colony can be isolated and used to innoculate a further plate or broth culture. All the bacteria present in a colony should be decendents of a single organism and so be genetically identical. To obtain a pure culture in liquid media, you would have to do numerous serial dilutions which is very labor intensive compared to streaking a solid medium. Even after many serial dilutions there would be no way to ensure a pure culture.
