The human body moves in many strange and unusual ways. Think of a barbie, her shoulders move can move in a windmill on the side of her body as well as cross the front of her body. This requires a special ball socket as well as our hips. Other joints like knees and elbows don't require all those special movements other then flexion and extension, otherwise I'm sure we would injure our knees more often if we had more motions, these are HINGE joints! The cartilage joints ( like those in our spine) are specific in that the spine bones dont necessarily need to move but rather flow with the other spine bones. Another great example is the pivot joint that holds our skull onto our spine. Now we use this joint to rotate our head in circles around our shoulders but that is all the motion we need!
