Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) uses 650nm wavelength laser diode light (part of the electromagnetic spectrum, in visable light section) which allows us to see it. CD uses 780nm wavelength, just outside of the electromagnetic spectrum, hence why we cannot 'see' it, only hear.
Most CD players use electromagnetic switches called relays. Have you ever turned on the power on your CD player or another appliance, and heard a click immediately before it went on? That's a relay doing its job. In a relay, a small current runs through a coil which is right next to a switch with a magnet in it. The coil pulls on the switch, closing it and turning on the device. Relays are useful because they use a small current to control a much larger one. As a result, they are often used in the power supplies of electronic devices such as CD Players

Gary, If you do this you are going to toast your CD player. I suppose you are thinking because the VA that it will be ok. It won't. Your CD is not desinged to handle the higher voltage . This is really no different that taking a 120 volt microwave and trying to plug it into 240 volt source; and I know you wouldn't want to do that. The only difference here is amps for household stuff and milliamps for your electronics. Same result though; you get to go and get a new one. . Andy

Bends and spreads out. When waves of any kind, sound, light electromagnetic radiation hit a gap in a barrier that is on the same scale as the wavelength then diffraction will occur. Diffraction is the bending of the wave and this appears as circular waves when we observe this effect with water.A common diffraction grating can be seen on a CD or DVD. The light spreads and we see this as different colours.
