Ball and socket
If the joint between your arm and shoulder was not a ball and socket joint, you could not be able to move your arm. Ball and socket joints allow you to move in most directions. Because of this, you can move your arm up, down, side to side, front and back, and around in a circle. The ball and socket joint is one of the four major kinds of movable joints. (The four major joints are ball and socket joints, gliding joints, hinge joints, and pivotal joints in case you didn't know.)
External rotation of the arm at the shoulder joint refers to the movement where the arm rotates outward away from the body. This motion occurs when the shoulder joint allows the arm to move in a way that the palm faces forward or upward. It is an important movement in various activities like throwing a ball or reaching behind the body.
The upper arm is the humerus, the lower arm is made up of the radius and ulna. The joint connecting the upper is called the humeroulnar joint.
It's a 'hinge' joint - it can only move in two directions (forward and back).

A hinge or pivot joint connects the arm to the base, allowing the arm to move up and down or rotate around a fixed point. This joint provides flexibility and range of motion for the arm to perform various tasks.
The "Elbow" is the joint of your arm.
During flexion, the shoulder joint allows the arm to move forward and upward, increasing the range of motion. During extension, the shoulder joint allows the arm to move backward and downward, decreasing the range of motion.
