Iowa has a variety of minerals, including gypsum, limestone, coal, and clay. Other minerals found in Iowa include limestone, basalt, calcite, and dolomite. Iowa also has some deposits of lead and zinc.

There is lots of limestone, sandstone and shale. In the northwest, there is quartzite. Gypsum is mined commercially in several location, both surface mines and deep underground. Around 1900, Iowa was a major coal mining state, but the last coal mines closed in the 1980s because the coal contained so much iron pyrite that coal from just about everywhere else burned cleaner. There was one iron mine in Iowa, operated in the early 20th century, and lead ore (galena) was mined in the Dubuque area. The state rock is the geode. Most geodes in Iowa come from the southeast corner of the state, they are dominated by quartz but may contain other minerals.
