The devastation was caused by Hurricane Katrina (August 29, 2005), and to a lesser extent the other large hurricanes Rita and Wilma. Katrina brought flooding to most of the city of New Orleans and suburbs to the east. Katrina's storm surge also damaged or destroyed most of the structures within 1/4 mile of the beach in coastal Mississippi. Rita struck western Louisiana and Texas on September 24, and reflooded parts of New Orleans. Wilma struck the west coast of Florida on October 24.
