The Earth orbits the Sun in an elliptical orbit. Our perihelion - the closest point of approach to the Sun - occurs around January 4 of each year. The Earth reaches aphelion , the farthest distance from the Sun, around July 4th of each year. (Those dates will vary a day or so in either direction depending on the cycle of leap years.)

So the Northern hemisphere is experiencing winter at perihelion, while the Southern Hemisphere is in summer when the Sun is closest.
