Well, the actual shoe is probably a boot of some kind, maybe even a Kamik.

But then there are snow shoes, which aren't exactly a shoe, but basically an enlarged sole that you put on your boots to keep from sinking into the snow.

Why is it hard to walk in snow with running shoes?

Running shoes are generally made for firm surfaces. On snow they won't provide as much grip. And of course, if the snow is deep, the running shoes - as any other shoe of the similar shape - will sink straight through. And you'll get snow inside the shoe as well.

Why do mountain hikers wear snowshoes with walking across areas with deep snow?

Why do mountain hikers wear snow shoes whilst walking over snow?Seems a bit self answering to me, but I'll humour it.They wear snow shoes because there's snow on the ground, and normal shoes would sink into it due to the high weights - surface area given by their current shoes. This' lowered by the snow shoes' greater surface area.
