What should you do if you were caught in a snow storm?

If you are caught in a snowstorm, try to find shelter from the wind. Cover exposed parts of your body and try to stay dry. If you are in a car, the driver should keep the engine running only if the exhaust pipe is clear of snow.

If you have a car stay inside it, don't go out for any reason. Keep a quality, heavy blanket in your car for emergencies.

You should do light exercises to keep your blood flowing, but don't overexert yourself because extreme cold puts strain on your heart, and if you break a sweat it may well freeze if it's cold enough.

If there are other people with you stay close. Don't go off alone and don't allow others to do so. If you go anywhere go together. Huddle together for warmth.

If you are outside try and find shelter from the cold first and foremost. If you are unable or there is no shelter, try to build a fire. This will keep you warm, (obviously) and attract attention to you. If you can find any you should place rocks around the fire to reflect heat back at you.

Never take off any clothing, unless there is absolute necessity. If you are bleeding try and tie off the area and stop the bleeding.

If you have frostbite don't scratch it - It will feel very similar to a sunburn, and very itchy.

DON'T get wet.
