Hurricane Joaquin had the same cause as most other Atlantic hurricanes. Joaquin began as an area of low pressure producing showers and thunderstorms over the warm waters of the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Fed by moisture from that water, the system organized and intensified becoming Tropical Depression Eleven and later Tropical Storm Joaquin. More moisture fed into the storm causing it to become a hurricane and, soon after, a major hurricane, eventually reaching category 4 intensity.
