Hail Storms can bring a ton of damage to homes, and especially those vulnerable rooftop air conditioning units. In Dallas, I have seen softball size hail that will damage air conditioners badly. If the hail hits in the right spot right on the vulnerable fan vents, it can break through and damage the fans and any other internal components. So it really depends on the size and severity of the storm to determine how much damage the hail can really do. Also something to keep in mind if you notice hail damage to your AC unit is that your roof may also have sustained damage during the onslaught. I would have both inspected especially if there is visible damage.

What is the differience between A Thunderstorm and A Hailstorm?

A thunderstorm is a type of storm characterized by lightning and thunder as a result of unstable atmospheric conditions. A hailstorm, on the other hand, is a type of storm that produces hail, which are ice pellets that form within strong thunderstorm updrafts. In some cases, a thunderstorm can produce hail, but not all thunderstorms result in hail.

When did Michigan's last hail storm occur?

Hail is common in Michigan as it is in many states, especially in the American Midwest. Asking this question during the summer, the default answer would be "no longer than a week ago, probably...". Additionally, Michigan is a very large area, and hail only occurs along a very narrow storm track (perhaps a few miles wide in most instances). So you need to be more specific in area, and also what you would define a "hail storm". Obviously large and excessive hail occurs less frequently than the benign pea size hail most commonly observed. You can find all hail reports of more than 1" in diameter at the link below (Storm Prediction Center) for any day going back a number of years. Just type the date in "past storm reports" and look for green or black markers over Michigan.

What is the difference between a storm and a supercell?

A supercell is a specific type of storm. Supercells are the strongest class of thunderstorm, characterized by a strong, rotating updraft called a mesocyclone. Supercells are known for their ability to produce very large hail and violent tornadoes.

What type of storm is most common all over the world?

What type of year does hail occur?

Hail typically occurs during severe thunderstorms in warmer months, particularly in spring and summer. Conditions conducive to hail formation include strong updrafts, high moisture levels, and significant temperature differences within the storm. These factors allow ice particles to develop and grow within the storm clouds before they eventually fall to the ground as hailstones. Regions with more intense thunderstorms, like the central United States, are particularly prone to hail events.

Will hail damage a slate roof?

Slate roofs are durable and resistant to hail damage due to their natural strength and density. However, exceptionally large hailstones or a very severe hailstorm could potentially cause some damage to a slate roof, such as cracking or chipping the tiles. Regular maintenance and inspection can help identify any damage early on.

Is there a written standard regarding hail damage to fiberglass shigles in the US?

As far as I know there is not. The type of roof, way that the shingles were installed, age of the shingles, number of layers of shingles, and many other factors all affect how a roof ages. I would suggest that if you are dealing with your insurance company you contact an engineering firm who specializes in this to conduct a study of your roof.
