Most hard rock was constructed by slow solidification of magma but some metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks can also be considered to be 'hard rock'. And most igneous rocks except volcanic ejecta are hard. But to a geologist a hard rock usually means a slowly solidified magma in which minerals had time enough to form visible crystals.
