Plants such as carrots or celery stalks are composed of vascular tissue.
Vascular bundles contain both xylem and phloem tissues. Xylem is responsible for transporting water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant, while phloem transports sugars and other organic compounds produced through photosynthesis to different parts of the plant.
The vascular tissue of a plant stem is surrounded by a layer of cells known as the endodermis. The endodermis is responsible for regulating the movement of water and nutrients into and out of the vascular tissue.
A plant that is not vascular does not have xylem or phloem to carry nutrients throughout the plant. The non vascular plants have a simpler transport system established for water and nutrients required.
The collateral open vascular bundles of dicots display xylem and phloem that are separated from each other by the fascicular cambium. These vascular bundles are also often surrounded by abundle sheath and the whole structure is imbedded in a parenchyma tissue called pith. Another type of vascular bundles are the bicollateral bundles.
The conjoint vascular bundle, in which one type of vascular tissue is surrounded by the other, is called concentric vascular bundle. When xylem is surrounded by phloem, it is called hadrocentric and when phloem is in the center, it is called leptocentric.
