What kind of information does a GPS satellite transmit to the GPS receiver

Basically:

  • a long pseudorandom number identification code
  • the current time on its internal atomic clock
  • its current coordinates
  • status information, including health of the satellite

From this with 3 or 4 satellite's signals, the receiver can compute a 2D or 3D fix respectively; using triangulation.

The pseudorandom number is used not only to identify the satellite but to find a known time mark in the message to use to compute the signal delay corresponding to the distance to that satellite.

What is meant by Global Positioning Satellite?

A Global Positioning satellite is one of several satellites that orbit the earth constantly broadcasting a signal the give their location. Collectively these satellites are called the Globle Positioning System or GPS. Global Positioning means the system is used to determine your position on the globe -- your latitude and longitude. GPS receivers can receive signals from these satellites and use them to calculate where on the earth the receiver (and thus the person with the receiver) is. Is GPS a type of special purpose software?

No, GPS is a technology that uses a system of satellites to provide location and time information to a GPS receiver. It is not a type of special purpose software but rather a hardware and software system used for navigation and location tracking.
