The centimeter would probably be the most convenient in everyday use.
You could use any of them but you end up with very big or very little numbers which is not that convenient. Who want to know their 12cm pencil is 0.12m long, 0.000,12km long or 120,000um (microns) long.......
In scientific or engineering use the centimeter is a little frowned on because it is not an "official" part of the SI system of unit prefixes. If you are mixing in these circles you might be better using milimeters (but I mix in these circles and have never been asked to measure my pencil :-)
Units don't measure anything. You only use them after you've made the
measurement, to describe the results.
Once you've measured a common ordinary pencil, you could just as well
use inches, centimeters, or millimeters to describe its length.
Centimeters/inches
The most appropriate metric unit for the purpose of measuring the length of a pencil would be centimetres.
Inches or centimeters. It depends where you are from.

The answer will depend on whether you want the mass of a pencil, its weight, its length, width, volume. You may want to measure its colour!
The centimetre.
Centimeters
Mostly, you would measure a pencil, or anything else, in centimeters if the metric system is your system of measurement and you find it more convenient to use centimeters than milimeters, meters, or kilometers. If, for example, you have a pencil that's 6 inches long, then 'centimeter' (cm) is the best metric unit in which to describe its length, simply because the cm produces the most convenient number ... the easiest number to write down remember, and tell other people about. See the list of examples, and select the one that's easiest to remember: The length of the pencil is: 15.24 centimeters, 6 inches, 1/2 foot. 1/6 yard, 0.0000947 mile, 0.1524 meter, 152400000 nanometers, 152.4 millimeters, 0.0001524 kilometer ... etc.

This is a bit arbitrary, but the name "length" is often reserved for the longest measurement, and the "width" would be perpendicular to the length. This is a bit arbitrary, but the name "length" is often reserved for the longest measurement, and the "width" would be perpendicular to the length. This is a bit arbitrary, but the name "length" is often reserved for the longest measurement, and the "width" would be perpendicular to the length. This is a bit arbitrary, but the name "length" is often reserved for the longest measurement, and the "width" would be perpendicular to the length.
